Yam is the common name for some plant species in the genus Dioscorea (family Dioscoreaceae) that form edible tubers. It is a tuber crop plant that has been in existence for years back and has been food for man. It is planted locally by cutting the head and dipped inside the soil, and at times hips are made on it to reduce the intense of heat on it.
The name, yam, appears to derive from Portuguese inhame or Canarian (Spain) ñame, which are probably derived from West African languages, such as Fulani, Serer, or Wolof. The main derivations borrow from verbs meaning “to eat”. Although, Yam is not only the known tuber crop, other related tuber crops include:
• Sweet potato
• Purple sweet potato
• Cocoyam; among others…
PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA
Although most agricultural activities take in the northern and south-western part of Nigeria because of the land fertility. In 2014, worldwide production of yams was 68.1 million tonnes, led by Nigeria with 66% of the global total (table). Nigeria farmed yams on 5.4 million hectares, 70% of the world land area of 7.8 million hectares devoted to yam farming. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization report, in 1985, Nigeria produced 18.3 million tonnes of yam from 1.5 million hectares, representing 73.8 percent of total yam production in Africa. However, yam productivity is high in the south-western part of Nigeria because of the soil fertility and moisture.
BENEFIT OF YAM
On a broad term, when we talk about the benefits of any food crop, we are talking about the nutritional values. Yam has a lot of nutritional values that could help in the growth and development of our body cells. Yams are carbohydrate rich, that is they are energy giving food. Apart from food, yams have long been symbolically associated with the culture and ritualism in some parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin Americas. Also, The digestibility and metabolism of diets based on flours prepared from raw, boiled or steamed tubers of the sweet yam (Dioscorea dumetorum) were evaluated in growing albino rats by the balance method in comparison with diets containing similar flours from the popular white yam (D rotundata).
Unfortunately, to access the full benefits or nutritional values of not even yam but other food crops, they have to be grown or raised healthily. Not planting with harmful chemical to hasting the year of production which will invariably affect the nutritional contents of the yam.
